Paul, I completely agree with you.

Multi disk RAID has valid uses, but its place is best left in the enterprise - where it can help to provide better uptime in an environment where replacement drives, controllers and copious backups are always on hand.

The worst thing about this sort of box in a domestic situation is the temptation for people to treat it as 'a backup'... they assume they don't need any other backup as the unit itself is more resilient (dead wrong!).

I went to the Apple Store today to get my iPhone 4 replaced due to a yellow screen issue. I showed it to a employee at the Genius Bar. I had a password set and forgot to unlock it for her. The lady didn't ask me for my password, she just simply typed in a 4 digit number. The number went "95??" I didn't see the last two digits. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Anyone want to try and figure out what the passcode is

The current range of GFX upgrades for Mac Pro in OS X is very limited. 5870 is the highest spec card "officially" supported for Mac Pro.
Some intrepid souls are using Windows build 6870 cards with hacked drivers in OS X, they do work but with limitations.

Apple have just released iMac models with new generation mobility GFX cards: e.g. 6970M 2GB as an option.

The future, with Lion being released fairly soon, looks to contain 6xxx series GFX cards so hold on with the upgrading till it arrives.

Weird. All three of my W7 boxes (DIY PC desktop, 2009 MBP and 2008 uMB) installed W7SP1 perfectly via Windows Update.

Have you tried downloading the update as an ISO?

And what about all the really simple things. Like if I select a bunch of files (eg: 8 photos), I want to be able to see the size (in Bytes) of the 8 photos I selected. Right now, Finder tells me that I have selected 8 files, but also tells me the total HD space remaining rather than the size of the 8 files.

Ahh yes, another pet peave. It would be cool if that tied in with my directory size thing too, so you could select both files and directories, and see the total size.

My downloads take the next available free speace on my desktop.

Pretty sure this is in Leopard. Didn't we see a pic somewhere?

Argh, I hate you! :D Maybe it's an issue of using Firefox instead of Safari? Like maybe some API for file creation will tell the Finder properly, and it lays it out right, and some other API will notify it in a different way? Like if I make a file with TextEdit, it shows up in a free spot on the Desktop.

Oh, they will have tabbed Finder windows? Sweet! I haven't been keeping up with all the OS X 10.5 threads..

Maybe it is a chip that takes a whole bunch of power, so they are making up for it by using 2 batteries. A 1.2 GHz tiBook would definitely not have too long of a battery life, unless it had 2 batteries. Good eye.

How many people file when they sell something on ebay. Do they go by the amount you sell or every transaction? I am sure ebay could set up a system to track sales.

eBay transactions rarely involve cash, right? Just see to it that the banks (card manager/paypal/whatever), which have accountants anyway, handle the tax part.

Wouldnt go so far as to say we're no where close because geohot doesnt own an ipad 2. You think he's owned all of the other idevices he's jailbroken and unlocked? comex jailbroke his ipad 2 and he wasnt even in the US or remotely close to his ipad 2. If geohot is truly on the case, all he will probably need is the exploit comex used and he'll likely have no problem dumping the bootrom. With all his latest issues with sony, I'd bet he's more than ready for a positive comeback and more donation money :) not saying that he does it for money so dont start whinin. jus sayin

I would assume the overnight line will form outside the northwest entrance (the one at the bottom of the ramp & tunnel underneath North End. That would make the most sense. This will be my first Apple launch day visit and my plan is to arrive at 6 AM as the doors to the MALL open.

This should be fun! See you guys there!

I posed this on another forum and got nothing back...I'm hoping someone here knows how to remedy this problem. Thanks! :D

This is a question I've been meaning to ask for a while. My internal modem, when I first got my iBook, made the typical dial and handshake sounds when I would dial a connection. I can't remember when it stopped, but it no longer makes a sound when it is dialing.

    I'm running an iBook G4 12" 1.2 GHz with 768 MB RAM.

Does this have anything to do with a modem script (I read something about this and it mentioned a modem script, but I don't think it solved the issue for the other user). I checked the settings for the modem in the Network preference pane. The radio button for Sound is set to On.

It might have happened to me after the Tiger upgrade as well. I'm not sure. Could it be a Tiger issue?

Any help anyone can provide is appreciated.

    Thanks!

We are quibbling details here.... but here are my thoughts about the HDD plan above.

Put the scratch disk on a 7200rpm drive, if you getting one. Make sure it's the first partition (this puts it, according to the research I did, on the outside of the platter. Seek times are faster here.)

You don't need to back up the scratch disk. It is populated when PS opens and you open files, then the contents are deleted when PS closes.

Make sure you have off-site backups. Since you are not a professional, you can probably get away with swapping the off-site back up weekly or even monthly. However, also have on-site back-ups. They do two different things.

The on-site back up should be updated at least daily. Get Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! (or similar) and let it run nightly. This creates a bootable backup. Plus, it's just automatic. You don't need to do anything once it's set up. Time machine also works well.

What SD! and CCC do is create a clone of your HDDs. If a drive fails, you buy a new drive and do a "restore". If the computer fails, CCC and SD! can actually be used to "boot" a loaner computer.

Time Machine is useful in that it keeps things up to date in 10 minute chunks (iirc) plus keeps versions of things so you can "undelete" files later on. I don't use TM myself.

You are most likely to need to go back to an on-site daily backup. HDDs fail. Computers break. All the time. Daily backups should be painless and automatic. Also, daily backups are probably only needed to replace the contents of a single HDD that crashed.

But.... occasionally there is the risk of a total system failure. Glass of water into system. Burst pipe in the room above you. (Water can 'run' really far... so the burst pipe can be in the bathroom above and over 3 rooms). Fire. Theft. Earthquake. Tree falling in a storm. This is when you want the offsite backup. You may lose everything you did since the last swap, but you haven't lost everything. I put mine in a safety deposit box. I've read about pro photographers who ship a HDD to friends off-continent.

Last thought. No one here has the foggiest idea when Apple is going to release the next Mac Pro. Or even if there is going to be a next version. Remember that this is a "Rumours" site, not a "News" site. So read up on the buyer's guide. Read some threads about when the next Mac Pro will be released. Some of us have an educated guess - but it's just that - a guess. And the "educated" I just add to make myself feel better. :)

Thank you for clarifying the scratch disc scenario, as I was in the dark. I will buy 7200 rpm drives at first. If I store photos etc, then I will consider 5400 rpm drives, as they are cheaper than 7200 rpm drives.

I will research the off-site and on-site backup plans, as this is a good strategy, especially when my collection increases two fold etc..

I plan to use Time Machine, Super Duper, or CCC. I spent a few miuntes researching CCC, but I have not researched Super Duper. I have read several threads regarding TM, which the information flows like wine in this forum! I like to have options and the off-site and on-site backup plans are worthy options to consider. Thanks again Sir!

Also, I have decided to wait for the Mac Pro refresh. I hope "rumors" are circulated soon speculating when the new Mac Pros will arrive on scene. Furthermore, I need time to research aspects of my backup plan, decide which software to buy, and lastly decide which machine is right for me, not in this particular order. Ultimately, I have to decide whether I want an 8 core or a 6 core. Thunderbolt is a game changer, hence I had better wait. The downside is: I still require a new computer. I am looking to buy either the 2010 or the 2011 MacBook Pro to replace my current laptop 'beater.' The beater has served me well, even though it is a "window" of the evil empire. :)

Again, I want to thank all of the 'Pro Photographers' on this forum who shared knowledge, backup plans, and general computer tid bits. You folks are first class! Your kind words, logical explanations are very helpful and are greatly appreciated, as I will use this thread as a future reference!
